The Arcane Stones & Glowstone

The Arcane Stones (Historical)

The Arcane Stones were eight artifacts of immense power, forged during the Divine War by the Arcanum Divinorum under divine direction. Each Stone was attuned to one of the eight schools of magic and could channel the purest form of that school’s energy. Together, the eight Stones allowed the gods and their mortal champions to harness the full spectrum of magical force against Erruuth.

The Stones were the key to Erruuth’s defeat. In the war’s climax, the gods channeled their combined might through all eight Stones simultaneously, creating the five gates that banished Erruuth to his prison. But the strain was catastrophic. The Arcane Stones fractured, their shards scattering across both continents. The gods, weakened by the effort, retreated behind the Divine Veil to recover—a retreat that continues to the present day.

In common knowledge, none of this is remembered. The Arcane Stones are not part of any living historical record. Their fragments—rediscovered centuries later as a green, faintly glowing mineral—are known by a different name entirely.

Glowstone

Glowstone—also called Jade Glowstone or Jadestone—is the name given to the crystalline fragments of the shattered Arcane Stones. When the Stones broke apart during the Divine War, the necrotic energies unleashed by Erruuth’s corruption washed over the fragments as they scattered and went inert. This exposure changed them. The original Arcane Stones had each manifested a distinct color corresponding to their school of magic. The necrotic saturation stripped those colors away and replaced them with a uniform green—the sickly hue of Erruuth’s influence, rendered beautiful by time and crystalline growth. Every piece of Glowstone on Voxana is green. This is not natural. It is a scar.

Over centuries, the inert fragments behaved like natural crystals: growing, branching, and forming veins through the surrounding rock and soil. The largest concentration settled in the northwest of Osan, near the Iron Mountains, in the area that would become the village of Wyndmoore. For a thousand years, Glowstone was treated as a natural mineral—beautiful, mildly luminescent, and commercially valuable. The Jewelers Guild of Wyndmoore built an entire economy around extracting, cutting, and selling Glowstone as decorative gemstone. The Jade River, which runs through Wyndmoore, carries Glowstone particles that give the water its distinctive green glow. Glowstone appeared in jewelry, ornamental architecture, and luxury goods across both continents. No one suspected it was anything more than an unusual mineral.

The Reactivation

The reactivation changed the world’s relationship with Glowstone overnight. Without warning, all Glowstone across Voxana—every fragment, every gemstone, every particle embedded in river sediment—began glowing with renewed intensity and emanating detectable arcane energy. After a millennium of dormancy, the shattered Arcane Stones stirred. Not explosively. Not dramatically. But noticeably. The glow brightened. The energy shifted from nothing to something. For anyone paying attention, the change was unmistakable.

The effects are subtle but widespread. The Jade River’s glow intensified enough to be visible in daylight. Glowstone deposits in mine walls pulse with faintly stronger light. Jewelry and ornamental pieces that had been inert decorations for generations now carry a low-level arcane hum that sensitive mages can detect. Across both continents, people who own Glowstone items—rings, pendants, decorative bowls, architectural inlays—have begun experiencing minor unexplained phenomena: a ring that feels warm at odd hours, a pendant that causes faintly vivid dreams, a decorative stone that makes a nearby candle flame flicker in rhythm. Most people do not connect these occurrences to the Glowstone. They attribute them to drafts, bad sleep, or imagination. The phenomena are real, but they are faint—not dangerous, not dramatic, just present in a way they never were before.

The green coloring of Glowstone—born from Erruuth’s necrotic corruption—may itself carry faint residual effects now that the fragments are active again. Nothing detrimental has been observed, but the fact that the world’s most widely distributed magical material is saturated with traces of necrotic energy is a concern that no one has yet articulated, because no one alive knows how the green color originated.

The Elder Sage Council took the reactivation seriously. Within days of the event, the Council convened in Wyndmoore—the epicenter of the phenomenon—to assess the situation. After their initial evaluation, they used their combined magical abilities to teleport to Tinker Town, where they met with the High Rollers adventuring party. This required extraordinary effort: teleportation circles across Voxana have been increasingly defective in recent years, failing intermittently with no satisfactory magical explanation. The Council’s ability to teleport through raw magical cooperation rather than established circles underscores both their power and the growing unreliability of the world’s magical infrastructure.

Narrative Possibilities: Living with Glowstone

The reactivation creates a rich vein of everyday mystery for DMs. Across both continents, thousands of people own Glowstone jewelry, decorations, and tools. Each piece is now faintly magical. A noblewoman’s Glowstone earrings give her headaches she can’t explain. A merchant’s display case of Glowstone gemstones makes his apprentice’s hair stand on end. A child’s Glowstone marble rolls toward north when placed on a flat surface. None of these effects are dangerous. All of them are unsettling. And collectively, they represent a mystery that stretches across the entire world—millions of fragments, all waking up, all doing something slightly different, and no one who understands why.

DM Truth: Why the Glowstone Reactivated

The Cult of the Veiled One’s ritual at the First Gate beneath Wyndmoore triggered the reactivation. When the cult opened the gate—partially freeing the energy that imprisoned Erruuth—the Arcane Stones responded. The fragments are shards of the weapons used to seal Erruuth away. They are resonating with the disturbance in his prison. The reactivation is not random. It is an alarm system that no one alive knows how to read.

A handful of Glowstone fragments have been discovered that are not green. These pieces—blue, red, purple, orange, yellow, brown, or white—correspond to the original Arcane Stone colors before Erruuth’s necrotic corruption turned them all green. They are extraordinarily rare. The High Rollers adventuring party discovered several in the Cult’s tunnels beneath Wyndmoore. These pieces carry faint resonance with their associated school of magic, but the effect is subtle and non-functional—detectable by a trained mage, but not useful as a magical tool in their current state.

Knowledge of colored Glowstone is extremely limited. The High Rollers have seen it firsthand. Jayce shared the discovery with the Administrator of the Jewelers Guild in Wyndmoore, who was shocked. Lilith Von Nosemount, the Mistress of Curiosities at Zumora, is also aware. The Elder Sage Council may suspect but has not confirmed. If this knowledge became widespread, it would rewrite the world’s understanding of Glowstone and invite dangerous attention.

It may be possible to change Glowstone’s color through alchemical reagents, magical processes, or other means—effectively stripping away Erruuth’s necrotic corruption and restoring a fragment’s original school attunement. If this is achievable, the implications are staggering: reconstituted school-attuned Glowstone could potentially be used to reinforce Erruuth’s prison, seal the gates, or—in the wrong hands—weaken them further. No one currently possesses this capability, but the theoretical possibility exists.

Known Glowstone Properties

Property Description
Luminescence All Glowstone emits visible green light. Intensity increased noticeably at reactivation but is not blinding or dramatic.
Arcane Resonance Active Glowstone emanates low-level arcane energy detectable by sensitive mages. The energy is present but not powerful.
Necrotic Trace The green coloring originates from Erruuth’s necrotic corruption at the time of shattering. Faint necrotic residue may be active post-reactivation. No detrimental effects observed.
Proximity Effect Active Glowstone intensifies the glow of nearby Glowstone. Concentrated deposits are brighter than isolated fragments.
Ambient Phenomena Glowstone items produce minor unexplained effects: warmth, vivid dreams, faint humming, subtle object movement. Effects vary by piece and are not dangerous.
Biological Interaction Prolonged contact with active Glowstone causes mild effects: tingling, warmth, heightened senses. Extended exposure effects are unknown and under study.
Teleportation Interference Teleportation circles across Voxana have been increasingly unreliable. No confirmed link to Glowstone, but the timing correlates with early signs of reactivation.
