The Weaves of Existence

The Loom spins distinct layers of reality called Weaves. Each Weave has its own metaphysical rules, its own inhabitants, and its own relationship to the others. They are not stacked neatly like floors in a building; they overlap, bleed, and occasionally tear into one another. Understanding the Weaves is essential for understanding how planes, magic, and threats work in Voxana.

The Material Weave

The mortal realm of Voxana. This is where the continents of Volaxia and Osan exist, where mortals live and die, and where most adventures take place. The Material Weave sits at the convergence of divine influence, arcane resonance, and elemental flow, making it the most complex and layered of all the Weaves.

The Material Weave is encased by the Divine Veil, which limits direct divine presence but still permits communication through dreams, miracles, and chosen champions. It is also the Weave most vulnerable to bleed from other planes: elemental surges, Fey crossings, Echo intrusions, and Fray corruption can all manifest here.

The Feyweave

A tethered Echo Weave of emotional resonance and cyclical time. The Feyweave is not a separate world so much as a reflection of the Material Weave seen through the lens of raw emotion and memory. Its geography shifts based on the feelings of those within it. A forest that inspires wonder may grow impossibly tall; a place of grief may become a barren hollow.

The Feyweave is home to fey courts, eternal cycles, and dream-born entities. Time does not pass linearly here. A mortal who spends a single night in the Feyweave may return to find centuries have passed in the Material Weave, or may arrive back moments before they left. The Feyweave is increasingly unstable in the present day; scholars who study it report seasonal drift and suspected Fray-bleed at its margins.

The Elemental Weaves

Six autonomous, fully woven realms of elemental resonance. Unlike the Feyweave, which mirrors the Material, each Elemental Weave is its own self-contained reality with its own logic and inhabitants. Elementals originate from these Weaves, and each can bleed into the Material Weave, causing wild magic zones, natural disasters, or the emergence of new lifeforms.

Weave Resonance Description
Flameweave Passion, destruction, rebirth A realm of eternal combustion where fire is not merely heat but emotion made manifest. Creation and annihilation are the same act here.
Stoneweave Endurance, structure, memory An infinite architecture of stone and crystal. Time moves slowly; nothing is forgotten; everything endures.
Tideweave Change, emotion, reflection Endless shifting waters that mirror the inner state of any who enter. Currents respond to feeling, not wind.
Stormweave Freedom, chaos, instinct A realm of perpetual tempest where lightning carries thought and thunder carries will. Order cannot hold here.
Greenweave Growth, mutation, life-force Uncontrolled biological abundance. Everything grows, adapts, and evolves at impossible speed. Beauty and horror intertwine.
Decayweave Rot, endings, reformation Where all things go to break down and be reconstituted. Not evil, but final. The compost heap of reality.

The Echo Weave

A layered metaphysical realm of unanchored threads and refracted truth. The Echo Weave is not a single place but a collection of overlapping sub-realms, each representing a different distortion of reality. It is mutable: time, self, and space are fluid. Seers, Echo-Walkers, and certain artifacts can attune to aspects of this realm.

The Dreaming Fold

Where desires and fears take shape. Mortals enter this layer when they dream, though most never realize it. Powerful dreamers, or those touched by Uvian’s thread, can navigate it consciously.

The Shadowfield

Identity blurs here. Perception misleads. The Shadowfield is where shadows are not merely absence of light but echoes of things that almost were. Those who linger too long may forget who they are, or become someone they never intended to be.

The Memory Groves

Past and future echo simultaneously in this sub-realm. Events that have already happened replay endlessly alongside events that have not yet occurred. The distinction between the two is not always clear.

The Forgotten Archive

Lost truths gather here—knowledge that was destroyed, erased, or deliberately hidden. Some scholars believe Galmir’s erasure of the Divine War created vast new deposits in the Forgotten Archive. If true, the memory of Erruuth, the Arcanum Divinorum, and the gods’ return may still exist somewhere in this layer, waiting to be found.

DM Truth: The Forgotten Archive

The Forgotten Archive is one of the most powerful adventure hooks in Voxana’s cosmology. If Galmir’s mass memory erasure deposited the truth of the Divine War here, then a sufficiently powerful party could theoretically travel to the Echo Weave and recover the erased knowledge. This is an intentional design feature: the truth was not destroyed, only relocated. Whether recovering it would be a blessing or a catastrophe is for your campaign to decide.

The Divine Weave

A sealed reality beyond mortal access. The Divine Weave houses the presence of the Twelve Gods and, some theologians believe, the souls of the dead who have passed through Chakrus’s final boundary. It is separated from the Material Weave by the Divine Veil and interacts with mortals only through miracles, omens, dreams, and chosen champions.

No mortal has ever entered the Divine Weave and returned to describe it. What little is known comes from divine visions granted to clerics and prophets, and these accounts are fragmentary and contradictory. The gods themselves have never described their home. Whether this is because they cannot, or because the knowledge would be dangerous to mortal minds, is a matter of theological debate.

The Fray

The Fray is not a plane. It is the Loom’s failure point—a tear, not a destination. Where threads break, tangle, rot, or unravel beyond the Loom’s ability to repair them, the Fray exists. It is the birthplace of Great Old Ones, failed gods, and impossible beings. Logic collapses within it. Memory fails. Language fractures. No one who walks the Fray returns whole.

Exposure to the Fray can cause resonance sickness, planar bleeding, or physical and mental transformation. Even indirect exposure—living near a Fray-bleed zone, handling artifacts that have been touched by it—can produce symptoms: recurring nightmares, loss of short-term memory, visual distortions, and in severe cases, the gradual dissolution of the boundary between self and surroundings.

DM Truth: The Fray as Campaign Threat

The Fray is designed to be Voxana’s ultimate background threat. The Split was a Threadbreak event that created permanent Fray scars across the Loom. A thousand years later, those scars have not healed. They may, in fact, be widening. The Rot—a fungal phenomenon transforming living things into fungal hybrids, present in both Greenflower on Volaxia and a sealed vault in Nin’Durahl on Osan—may be an expression of Fray-bleed into the Material Weave. This connection is left intentionally ambiguous so individual DMs can confirm, deny, or complicate it as their campaigns require.
