The Divine Veil is the metaphysical barrier between the Divine Weave and the Material Weave. It was created by the Twelve Gods during the Divine Concord, a pact made to preserve mortal agency after the gods recognized that their direct presence was eroding the free will and resilience of their creations.
The Veil serves as both a spiritual contract and a cosmological firewall. It prevents the gods from directly intervening in mortal affairs, but it does not sever the connection entirely. Divine influence can still pass through the Veil in limited, indirect forms.
What the Veil Permits
Prophetic dreams granted to clerics, prophets, and occasionally to ordinary mortals during moments of great need or spiritual crisis.
Divine miracles that manifest as seemingly natural events with divine timing: a sudden wind that shifts a battle, a drought that breaks on the day of a holy festival, a child born with a birthmark matching a god’s symbol.
Empowerment of champions through which clerics, paladins, and divine warlocks draw power. This is not the god acting directly; it is the god’s thread resonating through the Veil in response to devotion.
Symbolic omens and holy sites where the Veil is thinner than usual, allowing worshippers to feel a closer connection to their deity. Temples built on such sites often report more vivid visions and more powerful divine magic.
What the Veil Prevents
Direct manifestation of a god in the Material Weave. A god cannot appear, speak in their own voice, or physically intervene. They cannot reshape geography, raise armies, or strike down enemies with their own hand. The Veil makes divine power always indirect, always mediated, and always deniable. This is by design: ambiguity protects mortal free will.
The Veil’s Stability
The Divine Veil is not immutable. Its strength fluctuates based on several factors: cosmic alignment, mass divine resonance (such as thousands of worshippers invoking the same god simultaneously), arcane anomalies, and acts of high ritual or heretical worship. Some scholars suggest the Veil wavers during solstices, eclipses, and when too many divine domains are invoked at once.
DM Truth: The Veil Was Breached Once
Erruuth’s attempt to pierce the Divine Veil is the most catastrophic event in Voxana’s history. His breach did not merely weaken the Veil—it tore the Loom itself, causing the Split. During the subsequent Divine War, the gods broke the Concord and re-emerged through the Veil to fight Erruuth, further weakening it. After the war, the gods withdrew and the Veil was restored, but it has never fully recovered. In the present day, the Veil is thinner than it has been since the Concord, and the Glowstone reactivation suggests something is pressing against it from the other side.
