Crownheart Vale

Crownheart Vale is the political, cultural, and agricultural heart of Volaxia. Situated in the continent’s center, the region is defined by fertile hills, golden fields, and the Crystal River that winds through its landscape. This is where the Runeswick monarchy governs, where the major trade routes intersect, and where the institutions that hold Volaxia together are headquartered. It is the most populated, most prosperous, and most politically complex region on the continent.

Runeswick — The Capital

Runeswick is the largest city on Volaxia and the seat of the monarchy under the Keswick family. It occupies the western half of what was once the great city at the heart of Etherea—the eastern half, now called Runewick, stands across the Great Sea on Osan. The two cities share architectural roots, cultural memory, and a name that differs by a single letter.

The city is a melting pot of cultures and traditions, notable for its grand architecture, vibrant marketplaces, and institutions of learning. Runeswick serves as the center for arts, education, diplomacy, and governance on Volaxia. The Silverway begins at its eastern port district, carrying goods west across the continent. The city’s underbelly is rumored to include an extensive underground district—remnants of pre-Split construction that survived the cataclysm and have since been repurposed by those who prefer to operate beneath the crown’s notice.

DM Truth: Runeswick’s Secrets

The underground city beneath Runeswick is real and extensive. It contains pre-Split architecture that predates the current surface buildings by centuries. Some sections are controlled by criminal organizations; others are simply forgotten. Deep beneath the oldest foundations, there may be sealed vaults, leyline access points, or remnants of the original unified city that no one has entered since the Split.

Affea Omara, the Elder Sage of Transmutation, operates her Sanctum from the libraries of Runeswick. She is one of the eight Elder Sages spread across Voxana.

Sapphire Locke

A large lakeside town northwest of Runeswick, named for the striking sapphire-blue waters of its lake. Sapphire Locke’s economy rests on three pillars: timber from the surrounding forests, freshwater fish from the lake, and stone from a large quarry that supplies building material across Crownheart Vale. It is a significant trading post along the Golden Road and serves as the nearest major settlement to the Gilded Crossroads.

Duskfall

Famous for its vineyards and rich cultural life, Duskfall produces wines that are traded across both continents. The town is synonymous with culinary excellence and hosts a rotating calendar of cultural festivals. Its nightlife is the most vibrant on Volaxia, and bards consider a residency at Duskfall’s amphitheater to be a career-defining achievement.

Stonebridge

Named for its historic bridge—a massive stone span that has survived since before the Split—Stonebridge sits at a vital junction along the trade routes. The bridge itself is an engineering marvel, and scholars debate whether its construction predates mortal knowledge. The town blends historical significance with thriving modern commerce, and its market is considered the best place to find rare goods outside of Runeswick itself.

Moonlake Village

A small village celebrated for its scenic lake and tranquil atmosphere. Moonlake attracts artists, poets, and those seeking peace. The lake is said to reflect moonlight with unusual clarity, and devotees of Uvian maintain a small but beautiful shrine on its western shore. The village’s economy is modest—fishing, craft work, and a small but steady flow of visitors who come for the quiet.

Westhaven

A bustling maritime city on Volaxia’s western coast, Westhaven is the Silverway’s terminus and the continent’s primary western port. Ships from Westhaven trade with coastal settlements, island communities, and occasionally make the long voyage south to explore the uncharted waters beyond the Jagged Coast. The city is cosmopolitan by necessity, and its dockside quarter hosts communities from across the known world.

Guildspire — The Sanctuary Settlement

Guildspire lies along the eastern bend of the Crystal River, approximately twenty-five miles northeast of the Gilded Crossroads. Founded roughly six hundred years ago by veteran adventurers, it is a sanctuary settlement built around the Firefly Brigade—an adventuring institution that serves as stabilizers, explorers, defenders of the vulnerable, and stewards of recovered knowledge.

The town is organized into three districts. Riverward, where the Crystal River meets commerce, is practical and working-class. Market Rise is the social heart—the Gilded Tavern, the Temple of the Many, and the contract culture that connects patrons with capable hands. Lantern Hill is the institutional spine: the Lanternspire beacon, the Guildhall, the Beacon’s Vault archive, the Lantern’s Garden, and the training grounds where Lantern Bearers are shaped into something that survives.

The Firefly Brigade’s ranks progress from Lantern Bearers (recruits) through Lightkeepers (leaders) and Flamewardens (elite) to The Radiant (guildmaster). The current Radiant is Thrain Stonefist. The Brigade maintains outposts across the explored world, functioning as localized guild nodes for contracts and support.

This entry provides an overview of Guildspire for the sourcebook. A full Tier 1.5 supplement—the Guild Settlement Gazetteer—covers districts, NPCs, quest frameworks, and local politics in detail sufficient to run campaigns launching from the settlement.

Geographical Features

Emerald Hills. Fertile rolling hills that support extensive agriculture, including vineyards, grain fields, and orchards. The backbone of Volaxia’s food supply.

Crystal River. A vital waterway for trade and irrigation, flowing through Crownheart Vale and past Guildspire. Navigable by barge and small craft for much of its length.

Golden Fields. Expansive farmlands stretching south of Runeswick, key to the region’s and Volaxia’s food security.

The Verdant Cliffs. Picturesque cliffs along the eastern coast, providing stunning sea views and home to diverse seabird colonies.

Adventure Hooks: Crownheart Vale

The Keswick family has quietly dispatched agents to investigate a succession dispute. Someone is circulating documents that claim the current monarch’s bloodline is not what it appears to be. The documents may be forgeries—or they may not.

Stonebridge’s ancient bridge has begun to hum. Scholars who have studied it for decades insist it has never done this. The vibration coincides with the Glowstone reactivation.

A merchant caravan vanished on the Silverway between Runeswick and Westhaven. No wreckage, no bodies, no tracks. Three more caravans have since refused to make the run.
