South of Runeswick and the Golden Fields, the landscape softens into the Verdant Expanse—a vast region of fertile plains, enchanted forest, and pastoral farmland that extends from the central mountains to the western coast. The region is named for the Jade Plains, rolling grasslands that support the most productive agriculture on Volaxia. The climate is temperate: hot summers, mild winters, and regular rainfall.
The Verdant Expanse is Volaxia’s breadbasket, but it is also a region with deep connections to nature and to the druidic traditions that helped restore it after the Split. The Druid Circles maintain Sanctuary Archives throughout the region—collections of knowledge about flora, fauna, and natural history that serve as both libraries and living laboratories.
Key Settlements
Harder’s Field. A small agricultural community known for its prosperous crops and harmonious way of life. Harder’s Field is the kind of place adventurers come from rather than go to—quiet, honest, and deeply invested in the land. Its produce feeds a significant portion of southern Volaxia.
Shimmergrove. An elven village at the edge of the Glimmerwood, primarily inhabited by wood elves who maintain a careful relationship with the enchanted forest. Shimmergrove serves as the entry point for anyone seeking to travel into the Glimmerwood, and its residents are the most knowledgeable guides available—if they choose to help.
Greenflower. A town that once thrived on horticulture, famous for its gardens and nurseries. Greenflower is now the epicenter of the Rot—a devastating fungal phenomenon that transforms living things into fungal hybrids. The Druid Circles have contained the worst of it, but the cause remains unknown, the effects are terrifying, and the town’s residents live in a state of managed crisis.
Landmarks
The Glimmerwood. An enchanted forest known for its shimmering foliage and pervasive magical aura. The Glimmerwood is home to fae creatures, unusual flora, and phenomena that defy easy explanation. Deeper within, the forest grows stranger: paths loop, sounds echo from impossible directions, and travelers occasionally report encounters with beings that don’t belong to the Material Weave. The Feyweave is thin here.
Sanctuary Archives. Maintained by the Druid Circles, these scattered repositories contain extensive knowledge about Voxana’s natural world. They are not buildings in the conventional sense—many are grown rather than built, integrated into living trees or cave systems.
Jade Plains. The most fertile region in the Verdant Expanse, supporting the majority of the area’s agriculture. The plains take their name from a faint greenish tinge in the soil—which some scholars have recently begun to wonder about, given the Glowstone reactivation.
Travel Times in the Verdant Expanse
Harder’s Field to Shimmergrove: ~1.5 days on foot. Harder’s Field to Greenflower: ~2.5 days on foot. Shimmergrove to Greenflower: ~2 days on foot. Any Verdant Expanse town to Runeswick: ~7–10 days on foot depending on starting point.
DM Truth: The Rot
The Rot is one of the setting’s core mysteries. It transforms living organisms into fungal hybrids—plants, animals, and potentially people. It was first documented in Greenflower but has also been found in a sealed vault in Nin’Durahl on Osan, which means it is not a local phenomenon. Its cross-continental presence, combined with its intensification after the Glowstone reactivation, suggests a connection to deeper forces: the Fray, Erruuth’s stirring, or damage to the Loom itself. The Jade Plains’ greenish soil may or may not be related—a deliberate ambiguity for DMs to exploit.
Adventure Hooks: The Verdant Expanse
A Druid Circle has declared Greenflower quarantined. No one enters, no one leaves. But refugees are gathering at Harder’s Field with stories of the Rot spreading faster than the druids can contain it.
Deep in the Glimmerwood, a tree has begun to bleed light. Not sap—actual luminescence, the same color as activated Glowstone. The Shimmergrove elves are debating whether to investigate or burn it.
A Sanctuary Archive has been broken into. Nothing was stolen—but something was added. A single page of text in a language no one can read, pressed between existing documents as if it had always been there.
