The Grand Desert stretches across Osan from the western coast to the eastern coast, dividing the continent’s northern and southern halves like a belt of sand and silence. It is vast, harsh, and unforgiving—a landscape of shifting dunes, extreme heat, and terrain that changes overnight. The Whispering Sands, a region within the desert known for its mysterious sounds, has driven more than one traveler to madness.
Crossing the Grand Desert is possible but not casual. The most common route runs from the Crossroads Settlement south to Last Resort—a minimalistic camp featuring a fresh water well that serves as the final waystation before the crossing—then eight hours on foot across the narrowest stretch to reach Tinker Town on the southern side. An oasis lies roughly halfway along this route, offering shade and water to those who can find it.
Last Resort
Not a settlement so much as a survival necessity, Last Resort is a camp at the northern edge of the Grand Desert. It features a fresh water well, basic shelters, and the accumulated wisdom of those who have made the crossing before—scratched into the camp’s walls as warnings, advice, and the occasional epitaph. Travelers who bypass Last Resort without resupplying are considered either confident or suicidal.
The Oasis
Located approximately halfway between Last Resort and Tinker Town, the Oasis provides critical respite for desert travelers. Its appearance is deceptive—what seems like a natural formation of shade and water may not be entirely what it appears.
DM Truth: The Sunstone Temple
Beneath the sands of the Grand Desert lies the Sunstone Temple—the ancient sanctum of the Arcanum Divinorum, sealed beneath the dunes by Galmir Lothiren after the Divine War. The temple is hidden, warded, and intended to remain undiscovered. Its chambers contain the Heart of Luminance, the library of divine secrets, Galmir’s journal, and remnants of the Arcanum’s work with the Arcane Stones.
In the common understanding, the Sunstone Caverns are a myth—rumored to hold treasures lost to the ages, the kind of legend that draws treasure-hunters into the desert to die of thirst. The myth is real. The temple exists. Its discovery would upend everything the world believes about its own history.
The Oasis along the crossing route is near the territory of Lariel Gearspark, an eccentric gnome artificer working from a hidden underground workshop. Lariel’s presence is coincidental to the temple but adds another layer of mystery to the desert’s reputation.
Geographical Features
The Whispering Sands. A region of the desert known for producing eerie, shifting sounds—sometimes like distant voices, sometimes like music, sometimes like nothing at all. The sounds are attributed to wind patterns by scholars and to restless spirits by everyone else. Extended exposure is psychologically taxing.
Adventure Hooks: The Grand Desert
A treasure-hunting expedition has returned from the desert with a single artifact: a stone tablet inscribed with symbols that match no known language. The expedition’s leader is dead, and the survivors can’t agree on where they found it—or what killed their companions.
The Whispering Sands have gone silent. For the first time in recorded history, the desert is quiet. Scholars who study the phenomenon are more frightened by the silence than they ever were by the sound.
Someone is selling accurate maps to a ‘hidden location’ in the Grand Desert. The maps are too detailed to be fabrications. The Elder Sage Council wants to know who is selling them and how they obtained the information.
