In the northern waters of the Iron Reach, locked in ice for most of the year, a massive island sits in cold silence. The Iron Drift is the largest single landmass in the Sea of Lament—a fortress of frozen rock encased in glacial ice that creaks, shifts, and occasionally calves icebergs into the surrounding waters. The island takes its name from the slow, imperceptible drift of its ice shelf, which shifts position over decades in a pattern that has never been reliably predicted.
The Iron Drift is not hospitable. Its interior is a frozen plateau of bare rock and compacted ice, scoured by winds that come howling off the Iron Reach without obstruction. The coastline is a maze of ice shelves, frozen inlets, and glacial formations that make approach by ship dangerous even in the brief summer months when the surrounding ice loosens enough to permit navigation. Temperatures rarely rise above freezing, and the island’s only natural resources are whatever minerals lie beneath the ice and whatever creatures have adapted to survive in one of the harshest environments on Voxana.
Despite—or perhaps because of—its inaccessibility, the Iron Drift has accumulated a body of legend disproportionate to its barren surface. Sailors on the Iron Reach report seeing lights on the island that have no natural explanation. Nomadic tribes from the Frozen Wastes on Osan speak of the Drift as a place of power, a location they approach with reverence and refuse to set foot on. Dwarven prospectors from Nin’Durahl have twice mounted expeditions to assess the island’s mineral potential; both expeditions returned with inconclusive results and crew members who refused to discuss what they encountered.
DM Truth: What Sleeps Beneath the Ice
The Iron Drift is a fragment of the original Etherea that was blasted northward during the Split and frozen in place. Beneath the glacial ice, the island contains pre-Split structures that have been perfectly preserved by the cold—sealed, intact, and untouched for a thousand years. What those structures contain is deliberately undefined in this sourcebook: they could hold a gate imprisoning Erruuth, a cache of intact Arcane Stones, a vault sealed by the Arcanum Divinorum, or something entirely unrelated to the known threats. The Iron Drift is a high-level destination for campaigns that need a remote, dramatic, and deeply dangerous location.
The lights reported by sailors are real. Their source is beneath the ice. Whether they are connected to the Glowstone reactivation, to something older, or to something that was placed there intentionally is a question the sourcebook leaves to individual DMs.
Adventure Hooks: The Iron Drift
A dwarven expedition from Nin’Durahl is recruiting skilled adventurers for a third attempt at the Iron Drift. The first two came back with nothing. This time, they have a map fragment recovered from the Dwarfhold Ruins that they believe shows an entrance beneath the ice. The pay is exceptional. The survival odds are not.
The Iron Drift has moved. Not the glacial drift that gives it its name—the entire island has shifted position overnight, by miles. Ships on the Iron Reach are reporting ice where open water used to be. Something beneath the island has changed.
