The Veiled Isles

At the southern end of the Sea of Lament, in the warm waters of the Shimmering Gulf, a chain of active volcanic islands rises from the ocean in a curtain of steam and haze. The Veiled Isles take their name from the perpetual veil of volcanic mist that hangs over the chain—a shifting shroud of steam, sulfurous gas, and mineral-laden vapor that makes the islands visible from a distance as a smudge on the horizon but obscures their details until a vessel is dangerously close.

The chain consists of a dozen or more islands of varying size, arranged in a loose crescent. The largest islands support volcanic peaks that are intermittently active—eruptions are not constant, but they are frequent enough that the landscape is in a state of perpetual reinvention. Lava flows reshape coastlines over decades. New land appears; old land collapses into the sea. The vegetation is lush where the soil has cooled enough to support it, creating pockets of near-tropical jungle nestled between fields of black volcanic rock.

The Veiled Isles are not permanently settled in any organized way, but they are not empty. Volcanic minerals—obsidian, pumice, sulfur, and rare metals deposited by geothermal processes—draw prospectors and miners willing to work in hazardous conditions. The warm waters surrounding the chain support rich marine life, and fishing crews from the Golden Shores venture into the Gulf seasonally. Occasionally, more unusual visitors arrive: scholars studying the volcanic activity, mages investigating the interaction between geothermal energy and the Loom’s residual magic, and—less officially—people who want to disappear into a place that is very difficult to find and very easy to die in.

DM Truth: Fire and the Fray

The Veiled Isles’ volcanic activity is not entirely geological. The Loom is thin here—thinner than almost anywhere else on Voxana. The Split’s damage to reality left fractures in the metaphysical fabric, and in the Shimmering Gulf, those fractures vent energy as heat. The volcanoes are real, physical volcanoes, but the force driving them has a component that no geologist would recognize. The Fray—the entropic void beyond the Loom—is closer to the surface here than it should be.

Since the Glowstone reactivation, the volcanic activity has increased. New vents have opened on previously dormant islands. The mineral deposits being extracted by prospectors have begun to exhibit faint magical properties. And the veil of mist surrounding the chain has thickened, making the islands harder to find—or harder to leave.

Adventure Hooks: The Veiled Isles

A prospector has returned to Whitesand Harbor with a sample of volcanic glass that is not obsidian. It’s translucent, faintly warm, and resonates with Glowstone. He won’t say which island he found it on. He’s asking for investors, bodyguards, and—unusually—a cleric.

A fishing crew from the Golden Shores went into the Shimmering Gulf three weeks ago and hasn’t returned. A rescue expedition found their boat intact, anchored off one of the Veiled Isles, completely empty. The crew’s belongings are still aboard. Their logbook ends mid-sentence.

An island that was not in the Veiled Isles chain six months ago is now visible from passing ships. It is perfectly circular, covered in vegetation that should not exist on newly formed volcanic land, and at its center stands a single structure that predates anything in the post-Split world.
