Languages of Voxana

Common is the universal trade language of Voxana, spoken on both continents and across the Sea of Lament. It emerged during the Rebuilding as displaced communities needed a shared tongue, and it has been the default language of commerce, governance, and everyday life ever since. Almost everyone on Voxana speaks Common, though the dialect varies by region—a Common speaker from the Frostbourne Wilds and one from the Golden Shores will understand each other, but the accent, vocabulary, and cadence are noticeably different.

Racial languages persist alongside Common, maintained by cultural communities and taught within families, districts, and ancestral settlements. Dwarvish is spoken in Nin’Durahl, in the Dwarven Districts of major cities, and wherever dwarven mining communities operate. Elvish is spoken in Frostpine Village, Zumora, Shimmergrove, and elven quarters across both continents. Orcish is the language of Kruul’Dar and orcish communities. Gnomish, Goblin, Halfling, and Draconic are all maintained by their respective communities. These languages are living traditions, not relics—they evolve, they borrow from Common and from each other, and they carry cultural weight that Common alone cannot express.

Languages at the Table

Standard D&D 5e language rules apply. Common is universally understood. Racial languages reflect cultural connection rather than strict biology—a dwarf raised in Runeswick’s human quarter might speak Common and Elvish rather than Dwarvish, depending on their upbringing. DMs should treat language choices as opportunities for roleplay rather than mechanical gates.
