The Rot

The Rot is a fungal phenomenon that transforms living things into fungal hybrids. It is not a disease in the conventional sense—it does not spread through contact like plague. It manifests in specific locations, takes root in living tissue and organic material, and gradually converts its host into something that is neither fully alive nor fully dead. The transformation is slow, thorough, and—so far—irreversible.

Known Manifestations

Greenflower, Verdant Expanse, Volaxia. The agricultural community of Greenflower has been dealing with the Rot for an unknown period. The phenomenon affects crops, livestock, and vegetation—transforming living plants into fungal structures that retain the shape of the original organism but are composed entirely of mycological tissue. The Druid Circles have been managing containment, but they do not understand the Rot’s cause or mechanism.

The Sealed Vault, Nin’Durahl, Osan. The vault beneath Nin’Durahl—sealed since the Split and opened by the High Rollers with Galmir Lothiren’s assistance—contained extensive Rot growth throughout the ruins of the old library. The druid Ashkeithia recognized it as identical to the Rot plaguing her home of Greenflower. She collected samples for further study. The vault had been sealed for a thousand years, meaning the Rot inside predates the Rebuilding.

What the DM Knows

The Rot’s cross-continental presence is the critical clue. It exists in Greenflower on Volaxia and in a sealed vault in Nin’Durahl on Osan—locations separated by the entire Sea of Lament. It cannot have spread naturally from one to the other. The Rot either has a common source that predates the Split, or it is a phenomenon connected to something that operates across both continents simultaneously.

DM Choice: The Rot’s Origin

The Rot’s precise cause is deliberately left flexible. Several possibilities exist, and individual DMs should choose the explanation that best serves their campaign:

Erruuth’s Corruption: The Rot is a lingering effect of Erruuth’s necrotic corruption, seeded across Voxana when the Arcane Stones shattered. It lay dormant for a thousand years and reactivated alongside the Glowstone. This ties the Rot directly to the central threat.

The Fray Bleeding Through: The Rot originates from the Decayweave—the elemental realm of rot, endings, and reformation. The Split damaged the Loom enough that the Decayweave bleeds into the Material Weave at specific points. The Rot is not corruption but entropy—the natural end-state of a fraying reality.

The Loom’s Self-Repair: A more unsettling possibility: the Rot is the Loom attempting to repair itself by breaking down damaged material and rebuilding it. The fungal hybrids are not corrupted organisms—they are the Loom’s version of scar tissue. This interpretation makes the Rot neutral rather than evil, which complicates any attempt to stop it.

All three explanations are compatible with the existing world state. The Rot can also combine elements—a Fray bleed accelerated by Erruuth’s corruption, for example. The key narrative function is that the Rot is a mystery that connects Volaxia and Osan, demands investigation, and leads to deeper truths about the world’s metaphysical health.
