Overview
The Southern Reaches are a large archipelago of volcanic and coral islands stretching 500–800 miles south-southeast from the Land Bridge’s end, curving eastward across the equatorial ocean. The chain straddles the equator, occupying a band roughly between 15°N and 5°S latitude.

Three Tiers
The Threshold Islands (~15°N to 10°N)
A cluster of 8–12 large islands and dozens of smaller ones, separated from the Land Bridge by a 30–50 mile strait. The largest island is roughly the size of Jamaica (~4,400 sq mi). Climate is tropical: hot, wet, densely forested. Volcanic peaks in the interiors, coral reefs along the coasts. These are the islands the expedition mapped. They contain:
Stone foundations, wall fragments, and road surfaces heavily overgrown with tropical vegetation. Architectural style matches nothing from the post-Split world. The ruins are old — potentially pre-Split.
Unique wildlife found nowhere else on Voxana: brightly colored avians, large reptiles, insects of unusual size. The ecosystem appears to have developed in isolation for a very long time.

The Equatorial Chain (~10°N to 5°S)
Beyond the Threshold Islands, the chain continues as a string of smaller volcanic islands, atolls, and reef systems stretching across the equator. Individual islands range from a few square miles to a few hundred. The chain curves eastward, suggesting a possible geological connection to the Veiled Isles volcanic system in the Shimmering Gulf, though no one has confirmed this.
The Fading Isles (~5°S to 10–15°S)
The southernmost islands. Smaller, more widely spaced, increasingly barren. Volcanic activity is more pronounced. Water temperature drops noticeably compared to the equatorial chain. The last islands before open southern ocean are little more than rocky volcanic outcrops with sparse vegetation. No one from the known world has explored beyond them.
The Expedition
A Volaxian expedition traversed the Land Bridge, crossed the strait by raft, and spent approximately six weeks exploring and mapping the Threshold Islands. The expedition consisted of roughly 40 members. The cartographer produced detailed charts of three major islands. Losses occurred during the return journey through disease, a storm crossing the strait, and the grueling march back through 800+ miles of Wild South. Approximately half the expedition was lost. The survivors returned to Volaxia but have not spoken publicly about what they found.
What Lies Beyond
South of the Fading Isles, the ocean continues. No land has been confirmed between the Southern Reaches and the Storm Collar surrounding the Sunder — a gap of roughly 3,000–4,000 miles of open ocean. Whether the equatorial waters contain additional island chains, undiscovered continents, or empty ocean is completely unknown.
